We held an end of season wrap-up meeting at Weedons
on Monday 22nd. Representatives from various clubs discussed aspects
of the season. Overall, it was felt that the type of competition, rules and
length of season were about right. Some of the matters raised were:
Section Coordinators for Sections 3 and 4 need to be in place next season (they
worked well for sections 1 and 2). It’s not a large job but it does mean that
results from all games can be recorded and minor disputes/issues sorted.
The 30 over format for Section 1 worked well. We might need
to review the shift to an earlier start (8.30am) after Christmas as the dews
this year impacted on games.
For Sections 3 and 4 it needs to be stressed to coaches that
the batters hitting off the tee should hit in the ‘v’ between point and the
bowler’s wicket. Also, that two balls should be used – one being bowled and the
second ready to be hit off the batting tee.
For Section 2 it needs to be stressed that we play on full
size pitches but that there are no front foot no balls and that bowlers may
bowl from where they can comfortably get the ball down the wicket. The
expectation is that bowlers will bowl from the crease line as they get more
confident.
Representative cricket: There was a discussion on selection
criteria for the Junior age groups. It was resolved that boys younger than the
age group being chosen may play for that team where circumstances require (say
a year 6 in a year 7 team) but that the expectation is that these players will
only play in one age-group tournament (unless there are extenuating circumstances).
We also need to ensure that there are coaches available to take the trial teams
before Christmas.
At the High School level there has been a move back to Under
15 teams. Country will also form a Year 9 team to play a few games through the
season.
High School Cricket: There was a lot of discussion about the
transition to high school for cricket. At the moment the district has teams
playing in the town competition from the Lincoln High School-Ellesmere High
Lions and from Weedons. Canterbury Country are looking at the feasibility of
having an ‘umbrella’ club (say Canterbury Country Schools) which would include
the Lions, Weedons and North Canterbury and which would allow for some combined
teams where appropriate.
